Kenya Information
Kenya was a British colony and gained independence in 1963. Kenya is located in East Africa, with a population of 37.5 million. It was named after Mount Kenya which is the second highest mountain in Africa.
Kenya is not landlocked its Southeast border runs along the Indian Ocean, its main port is Mombasa. Its neighbors are Tanzania, Uganda, Somali, Sudan and Ethiopia.
The capital city is Nairobi and the main costal city is Mombasa.
The main tribes are Luhya, Luo, Kalenjin, Kamba and kikuyu. Kikuyu being the largest totals about 5 million (22%) of the population.The official languages are English and Swahili.
The much loved President of the United States Barack Obama has his ethnic roots in this country; his late father was born in a village called Kegelo. Mr Obama's step-grandmother Sarah who came to for the inauguration in Washington still lives in this village.
